Sensational Steak Sandwiches

This recipe is a must if you feel like making something extra special. Turkish bread topped with steak, cheese, balsamic onions and dijon mushrooms…what more could you want. This meal may not be flash but it is sure to please. My boyfriend absolutely loves these sandwiches and would easily give them a 10/10!

Make this for yourself, your family or your other half and you will be sure to have them salivating ❤

Ingredients

  • 400 – 500g good quality sirloin, ribeye or rump steak
  • 3 tsp crushed garlic
  • 250g sliced button mushrooms
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 2 cups baby spinach leaves
  • 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley

Caramelised onions

  • 25g butter
  • 3 onions, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  •  2 tablespoons brown sugar

To serve

  • Turkish loaf
  • Baby spinach
  • Mayonnaise and/or tomato relish – I use both
  • Colby or tasty cheese, sliced

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to grill
  2. To make the caramelised onions, heat the butter over a medium-low heat until it begins to froth. Add the onions and cook for about 25-30 minutes, stirring often until the onion is very soft. Add the balsamic vinegar and brown sugar, and cook for another 10 minutes until the onions reach a jammy consistency.
  3. Prepare the steak by patting meat dry, brush each side with oil and season with salt and pepper. Heat a teaspoon of oil in a pan over a high heat. Add the steak and cook for a couple of minutes on each side – or until cooked to your liking.
  4. Transfer steak to a chopping board and cover loosely with tin-foil to rest for 5-10 minutes. Once rested cut steak into thin slices against the grain.
  5. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan over a medium-high heat. Add the garlic, mushrooms and thyme and cook for 5-10 minutes or until soft. Add the spinach and cook for another couple of minutes. Stir through the mustard and parsley, and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Lightly toast the turkish bread, spread one side of bread with mayonnaise and the other with the tomato relish. Add spinach, mushrooms and cheese. Add sliced steak and caramelised onions.
